Historical information

The Matthews Hill area forms part of the Grand Junction Estate and Matthews Hill Precinct, one of Sunshine’s earliest residential subdivisions.

- The Grand Junction Estate was first subdivided in 1886.
- The southern half of what is now Matthews Hill was subdivided between 1911 and 1925.
- This makes the precinct one of Sunshine’s earliest planned residential neighbourhoods, predating much of the interwar suburban expansion.

The precinct stretches between Dickson Street and Matthews Street, bounded by Kingaroy Road, McKay Street, Servante Street, and the railway line.

This is the original Matthew's Hill farmhouse. It was located on the North East corner of Derby Road (Now Mattrews Street) and Cornwall Road Sunshine.

Significance

This is one of a few photographs of the original farmhouses in Sunshine.

The local area is known as Matthews Hill, named after the original farm owner.
