Three handwritten letters by John Kelvie Chesters VX67750 sent to his family.
First letter dated 3/1/1942 reads travel by train from Caulfield to Darley.
Second letter reads left Darley following day for Adelaide then journey to Darwin.
Third letter reads Gull Force AIF Abroad and about reaction to vaccination, leaving Darwin by boat and his real age being discovered - apparently aged 17 1/2 years when enlisted.
Born on 11/12/1922 at Footscray Enlisted on 12/12/1941 and serviced with the Australian Army Canteen Service (AACS). John was deployed to Ambon in the Dutch East Indies and taken prisoner of war and died of illness on 1/7/1945 aged 22 years. Buried at Galala War Cemetery Ambon..
Son of Thomas Kelvie Chesters who served during WW1 and likely named in honour of his brother John Chesters who was killed in action in France during WW1.
