On 20 April 1908, at about 10:50 pm, a Melbourne‑bound Bendigo express ran into the rear of a Ballarat train standing at Sunshine Station. The collision occurred at the junction at Sunshine railway station, on the Bendigo and Ballarat lines in Sunshine, Victoria.

It was Australia's worst railway accident, and the impact was catastrophic, destroying several wooden carriages and causing a mass‑casualty event with 44 people killed and over 400 injured.
