Historical information
This photograph shows the work of excavating cable tram tracks and tunnels in preparation for the installation of an electric tramway. The track in the centre of the roadway is fenced off, one track is still intact while the other has been completely removed. Workmen are shown on the tracks while replacement buses, and motor and horse drawn vehicles travel along the sides of the roadway. The road is lined with shops and commercial premises into the distance but is not named. It may be High Street, St Kilda or Bridge Road, Richmond in 1926 or 1927 respectively. Being a copy of a newspaper photograph, clarity is poor.
