Historical information
Used to hold the ticket records or trip journals of a conductor. Stamped initially for use by the Esplanade (St Kilda - Acland St. cable tram depot), no. 83 and "Cable Tramway". Also has number 83, letter "K". Possibly made when the MMTB introduced paper tickets onto the cable trams or could be earlier. See item 8349 and 8353 for other examples. Cover has "nicks" in the top and bottom edges where rubber bands would have been used to retain the paper journal. On the inside has remnants of paper sheets that have been glued in such as tram stop lists for Kew Depot.
Significance
Demonstrates a cable tram era leather journal cover used tor record trips and tickets sold.
