Historical information
The "Red Rattlers", or Tait trains, were red-painted trains that served Melbourne's suburban railway network from 1910 until 1984 (initially steam-hauled and then electric from 1919). Known for their timber-bodied construction, rattling windows, and distinct, manual sliding doors. They were common on the St Kilda line and the photo shows one at St Kilda railway station. The St Kilda line officially closed on 31 July 1987.
