Photograph - Cable Tram outside Myer Lonsdale Street store, 1924-25

Historical information

Photograph shows a cable tram set in Lonsdale Street in front of numerous Myer Emporium buildings with a destination of Toorak. Numerous motor and horse-drawn vehicles are in the street and a fire hydrant is in the foreground. This short section of cable track between Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street was the last cable track to be built in Melbourne. It was to provide a new terminus for south suburban cable trams when electric tramway was extended down Swanston Street from Queensberry Street to Lonsdale Street in 1924. While this track remained in use until 1939, Toorak bound trams ceased at the end of 1925 when the rest of Swanston Street was converted to electric trams.
