The photograph shows one of the first trams, W5 class 783, route 57 across the Maribyrnong River bridge on 23-12-1940. This photo appeared in The Age on 24-12-1940. Work is still being undertaken on the bridge that was built by the Country Roads Board for the MMTB as part of the World War II project to provide better transport to the Munitions work at West Maribyrnong. It was built as a single-track bridge and then duplicated on 1/4/1942.
