Manufactured by the MMTB in 1922 to assist in payment of fares at the time of an increase in fares by a half penny - not enough half pennies in circulation to cope. Refer to MMTB Minute book No. 2 Phased out during 1924 - see reference.
Significance
Demonstrates a MMTB 1 1/2d token to enable passengers to pay fares.
Physical description
Fare token - 1 1/2d - 22mm diameter - dark brown made from paper mache - with words "Melbourne & Metropolitan" on circumference and "Tramways Board" in centre of token. On reverse in large font "1 1/2" and a small font "D" at to the right - indicating the token had a value of one and a half pence. Both sides have an edge lining border about 1mm from the outer edge.
