Historical information

A Nissen hut is a prefabricated, semi‑cylindrical structure made from corrugated steel sheeting over a lightweight steel-and-timber frame. It was invented in 1916 by Major Peter Norman Nissen of the British Army during WWI.

The Maribyrnong Migrant Hoste, located around Williamson Road and Hampstead Road, used large numbers of ex‑WWII Nissen/Quonset huts as its earliest accommodation. These huts defined the look and feel of the hostel in the 1950s and early 1960s.

These huts were used before the construction of the later Midway Hostel (1969) and Phillip Hostel (1971).
