Historical information

The medal was issued in 1953 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. A total of 129,051 medals were struck and presented as personal souvenirs to government officials, military personnel, and Royal Household members throughout the Commonwealth. Of these, 11,561 were allocated to Australians. This medal was presented to WH Greaves, who at the time was the Town Clerk of the City of St Kilda.

Physical description

A silver medal featuring a crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the collar of the Garter and Badge of the Bath. On the reverse is the Royal Cypher EIIR, surmounted by a large crown. Around the rim are the inscribed words 'QUEEN ELIZABETH II CROWNED 2ND JUNE 1953'. The medal is swing mounted on a red ribbon with two narrow blue stripes in the centre and a narrow white stripe at each edge. It is presented in a red cardboard box that has been stamped in black ink with an image of the crown, the Royal Cypher of Queen Elizabeth II, the year 1953, and the words 'CORONATION MEDAL'.
