Historical information
The Australian Natives' Association was established in Melbourne in 1871 as a non-partisan and non-sectarian friendly society for Australian-born, white men. It was highly influential in rallying support for Federation and became an advocate for White Australia. A white map of Australia was commonly used to convey support for a white, predominantly British population. The St Kilda Historical Society rejects all forms of racism irrespective of the time and context in which it arises.
WH Hutchison started a plumbing business at St Kilda junction in 1914. In the 1920s he designed and patented the Little Hero chip bath heater. In the 1930s his son Herbert became a partner in the business, and the name changed to W Hutchison & Son. In 1981 his grandson Harvey took over and formed the company W Hutchison & Son P/L.
