Historical information
Poster advertising a benefit concert, held on 30 July at 7:30pm at the Prince of Wales hotel on Fitzroy Street St Kilda, to support the campaign to protect The Esplanade Hotel as a premier venue for live music. Performers included Fred Negro's Shonkytonk, Ian Rilen and the Love Addicts, Steve Prictor and his Violent Mood Swings, Nick Barker, Nudist Funk Orchestra, Phil Para, Cam Butler and his Guitar Orchestra, Mark Eden Band, the Ocelots, Wendy Rule 'plus more to be announced'.
The event was held toward the end of an extensive and protracted six-year community battle over the proposed redevelopment of the hotel. The Esplanade Alliance started the Keep the Espy Live campaign to raise funds to oppose an appeal by the developers against the Council's decision to refuse its planning application.
