Historical information

The Duke Street Community House (DSCH) was established in 1973, the Community House emerged during the wave of neighbourhood house development across Victoria.

Its founding mission centred on social justice, responding to poverty, hardship, and social isolation in Sunshine, then a working‑class suburb shaped by migration, industrial employment, and limited social infrastructure.

The house operated from 27 Duke Street, Sunshine, a property owned and maintained by Brimbank City Council.

Early programs focused on basic education, community support, material aid, social groups, childcare (as noted in later organisational descriptions).

This places DSCH among the earliest community‑run social support centres in Melbourne’s west.
