Historical information

The Victorian gold discoveries attracted thousands of immigrants who came half way around the world to make a better life for themselves. When Ballarat miners organised protest meetings and petitions against their mistreatment and lack of political representation, the government viewed this protest as treason and ordered its forces to teach the miners a lesson. The miners built their stockade at Eureka as a defence as a defensive measure. The attack on ther miners at Ballarat was on 3rd December, 1854. The Eureka fighting forms part of the eduring legacy of the miners, and rights representation in Australia.
