Summary

The story starts with the sudden death of George Carleton St. John. His second wife, Charlotte (née Norris), is unexpectedly granted control over his two sons, including the heir to the grand Alnwick estate. Severe doubts emerge regarding her fitness as a guardian, which culminates in a tragic event that happens on St. Martin's Eve. Alongside this domestic dispute, the narrative follows Frederick St. John in France as his pursuit of a woman engaged to a French baron results in heartbreak.
