Historical information
The word 'Marong' is derived from the Djadjawurrung word for the Murray River Pine tree. The Shire of Marong was created on 23 December 1864. The first Shire President was Mr Charles Yeo. Meetings for the shire were initially held at Lockwood but later transferred to Marong. In 1994 the Shire of Marong was incorporated into the City of Greater Bendigo.
