Book - "The Bendigo Fire Brigade. A history of its development", 2001

Historical information

The history of the fire service in Victoria is closely related to the history of the state, reflecting the rise, and sometimes decline, of the centres of population. Bendigo, as a large and enduring goldfield, played a main role in pioneering the establishment and progress of the fire brigade system. The text tells something of the effort by early citizens, backed only by contributions from insurance companies, local bodies and their own fundraising efforts, to establish an essential service. Sandhurst Fire Brigade was established in April, 1855 following a public meeting.
