The Melbourne Conservatorium opened in 1894 in rented rooms opposite the Carlton Gardens and had 150 students by 1899. Dame Nellie Melba laid the foundation stone for a permanent conservatorium building on the University of Melbourne’s Parkville campus in 1909, and the building was opened in 1913. A north wing was added in 1926-27 and a new south wing was completed in 1935.
