Historical information

The history of this land dates back many decades, when at first in the late 19th century, the site started as a quarry, and this continued until the late 1960's. During this time large quantities of bluestone was extracted from the site,

The site was then purchased by the City of Sunshine which subsequently turned it into a tip.

In the 1970’s and 1980’s, this disused quarry then became one of the main waste disposal sites for metropolitan Melbourne.

Significance

Sunshine Energy Park is an ambitious, once-in-a-generation project to transform a 74-hectare closed landfill and former quarry in Albion located in Melbourne’s west into a landmark public space.

Led by the City of Brimbank, the vision is for Sunshine Energy Park to become the ‘Central Park’ of the west, a catalyst for environmental innovation, inclusive wellbeing, economic opportunity, sports excellence and Caring for Country.
