Historical information
These photographs, taken by former Sunshine resident Harry Cassio, of the model railway diorama he created to depict the township of Sunshine.
The timeline represented is set in the late 1950s, based on historic photographs taken by his father and on Harry’s own memories. Many components of the model were scratch‑built by Harry.
The size of the diorama baseboard is approximately 4.5 metres x 2.5 metres in a model scale of HO (1:87).
Significance
Model dioramas matter because they do something no photograph, map, or written record can do, they restore a world in three dimensions, letting people see a place, moment, or system as it once was.
For the history of Sunshine, this diorama is a powerful tool that can bring back people's memories, promote discuss and storytelling for current and future generations.
