Historical information
This tram was built in 1913 by Duncan and Fraser in 1913 for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust. It began service as their Number 35. It was classified "C" by the Melbourne Tramways Board. In 1951 it was sold to the State Electricity Commission of Victoria and renumbered 40. This tram was the last Ballarat tram to operate by the SEC to officially carry passengers in Ballarat on 19 September 1971.
Tram 40 had a Maximum Traction truck bogie (eight wheels), drop end and centre combination.
The photograph shows the tram on Drummond Street at the Urquhart Street loop. Another tram is about to enter the loop to allow No 40 to proceed on the way to Sebastopol.
