Functional object - Destination Roll, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), "Footscray Depot", late 1940s

Historical information

Used by the MMTB at the Footscray Depot on X2-class tram 679, as this number is pencilled on one end. Destinations in order from top are: EXPLOSIVES FACTORY; ORDANCE FTY; DEPOT; WILLIAMSTOWN RD; RAILWAY STATION; RUSSELL ST; BALLARAT RD; SPECIAL; FOOTBALL GROUND; AMMUNITION FACTORY; PYROTECHNIC FACTORY; CITY VIA HAYMARKE; SPECIAL E. The Special E destination was used to indicate to passengers that it was a special tram to the Explosives Factory during WW2 and not to tell "spys" that exactly where it was going. The Footscray system, except for route 82 closed in 1962.
