Summary

The business that took John Piper to novelist Edith Ellerby's country house, Sicklehurst, had nothing to do with murder. The shot that Piper heard soon after his arrival had apparently had nothing to do with murder either; he was told that Edith's secretary, Walter Parr, enjoyed shooting rabbits. It was an uneasy party which gathered there and Piper was landed with one of the trickiest problems he had ever encountered - a problem which led to a terrifying conclusion.
