Summary

It seemed to be the most hopeless case that Detective-Inspector James Dale had been called upon to investigate. The body had been in the river so long that identification was impossible. The only concrete clues were a sack and some clothes-line - both of a common and widely used make. Yet it was from this scant evidence that the case was eventually solved, but not before many hours of tiring, exhausting investigation had unearthed dead ends, immaterial and misleading facts and finally the murderer.
