These photographs were taken by various members of the public who attended the Sunshine Safe Communities, Stronger Laws, Justice for Victims Rally on the 9th August 2026.
This rally was in response to the attack on the Sunshine grocer Van Viet Truong, owner of Hong Hung Asian Grocery which occurred on Saturday, 1st August 2026.
He intervened into a shopping lifting incident of another local trader by a group of five teenagers. These teenagers then physically attacked him and knocked him to the ground causing serious head injuries.
Van Viet Truong died from these injuries several days later in hospital on the Wednesday, 5th August 2026.
Significance
The violent assault and subsequent death of the local Sunshine trade,r Van Viet Truong had a profound and immediate impact on the Sunshine community.
The incident shocked Family Members, Residents, Traders, Federal, State and Local Government Leaders, prompting widespread grief, public discussion, and calls for action on youth violence and trader safety.
