Historical information
Photograph looks north across Collins and Swanston Sts intersection to the Town Hall. A cable tram, tramway signalman and many pedestrians are shown. This was the busiest cable tram crossing. The signalman had two roles. Before police controlled the intersection, he used signals and flags to guide the gripmen through the intersection. Also, as the Collins St hill caused the cable to rise up through the slot onto the roadway, he operated a suppression bar which held the cable in the tunnel until a tram needed to pass through the intersection.
