Photograph - Collins St cable tram lineup, c1915

Historical information

Photograph looks west along Collins St likely from Swanston St with a line of busy cable trams nose-to-tail on the east bound track. While the west bound track is mostly free of trams, in the distance the rear of one tram can be seen along with the backs of half a dozen men and women. Towards the southern footpath hundred of people in suits and similar attire have gathered behind a long barrier. A large banner hangs above Collins St displaying a large cross which may be the Military Cross instituted by King George V in 1914 for acts of bravery in war. The half dozen people walking close to the tracks may be Military Cross recipients or family.
