Photograph shows a Victorian Railways conductress accepting money from a passenger in the smoker section of a VR bogie tramcar at night. Before WWII women were not employed as tram crew in Victoria or other states. With manpower shortages during the war, the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board followed by the Victorian Railways employed women as conductresses from 1941, despite many male colleagues objecting. This conductress is Miss T Thompson.
