Historical information

In 1922 the Numismatic Association of Victoria decided not to have a medallion struck to commemorate the opening of the first passenger railway in Australia, Melbourne to Sandridge. Two members of the Association, Alfred CHITTY and William Alfred HALL subsequently designed a medallion and created a private issue of 50 pieces produced by Stokes & Sons.

Physical description

Bronze medallion commemorating the opening of the Melbourne to Sandridge railway 12 September 1854 also early Victorian railways - Melbourne to Geelong, 1857; Melbourne to St Kilda, 1857; Melbourne to Williamstown, 1859; Melbourne to Essendon, 1860.

The design on the front of the medallion is based on S T Gill's drawing "The City of Terminus of the M. & H.B. Railway Co. 1854" with the initials of the creators at the bottom "A.C." - Alfred CHITTY, "S & S" - Stokes & Sons and W.A.H. - William Alfred HALL.
