Historical information

Following standard British and colonial naval traditions adopted by early Australian yachting communities, official club members wore distinct dark navy blue reefer jackets or blazers, with buttons displaying the club's monogram, during formal functions, dinners, and off-water events.
The St Kilda Yacht Club arose from the formation of the St Kilda Sailing Club in 1876. The club was renamed the St Kilda Yacht Club in 1884. In April 1924, King George V bestowed the title 'Royal'. In 1961 Queen Elizabeth II approved the change of name from Royal St Kilda Yacht Club to Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron.
