Historical information

Clothing, food and other consumer items were rationed during World War II to reduce consumption and limit inflation caused by shortages. Petrol rationing was introduced in June 1940 and remained in place until February 1950 in the face of strong opposition by the motor industry. Drivers had to apply for a petrol licence and were then allocated ration tickets based on their needs.
