Historical information

St. Kilda was declared to be a City on 8 September, 1890 and the official public Proclamation ceremony and celebration to mark its elevation from a Borough to a City was on 2nd December, 1890. Around 3,000 local school children joined in the celebrations. Brighton Road State School is now known as St Kilda Primary School and dates back to 1 January 1875.
The fabric and printing indicates that the ribbon is an original rather than a reproduction.

Physical description

Gold coloured ribbon with frayed edge, printed in blue. One page handwritten letter, written by the donor of the ribbon, describing how the day was celebrated at Brighton Road School, where she was a student.

This ribbon enclosed was issued to the children of the Brighton Road State School No. 1479 for the proclamation of St. Kilda to become a City and it was celebrated by a large gathering in the St. Kilda Cricket Ground.
Each child received a present and mine was supposed to be a paint box, but was useless as it contained only pieces of painted wood.
