Thomas Joseph Fogarty, born 15th July 1859, came to Australia from Tipperary, Ireland and opened two licensed grocery stores in Balaclava and Caulfield South in Victoria. His first store in Balaclava was at 145 Carlisle Street. Following a fire on 25 February 1907, the store was moved to 159 Carlisle Street. The store was later run by his son Francis Joseph Fogarty who moved it across the road in about 1950, though the registered office remained 159 Carlisle Street. The business closed in the late 1970s.
