Paper presented to the 31/3/1927 Annual meeting of the Victorian Institute of Engineers by W R Pollock, titled "Melbourne Cable Tramway System". Covers the motive power, the steam engines themselves, horse power required for the system of cables, operations, effects of flooding on the cable, the cables themselves, rope materials, changing ropes over, use of pulleys, supervision of the ropes, wearing of the rope, repairs, operation of the cables, bunched strands, splicing of new ropes into old ropes, keeping of records, and country of manufacture. Followed by a series of questions and answers from attendees; operation of the grip, could ropes be made in Australia and loading on the cable.
