Historical information

The gold era - especially the years between 1851 and 1861 - are seen as by many as one of the more vigorous and interesting periods of the first century of European settlement in Australia. During the 'rush', the goldfields were scenes of frenzied activity. Life there was hard work - but it was also a gamble, and the rewards could be spectacularly high, or nothing at all.
