Historical information

After 103 years of continuous activity on the field the last gold mine in Bendigo was closed in 1954. The city of Bendigo had by this time outgrown its mining origins and it now functions as an important regional centre for much of north-west Victoria. The goldmining era has left behind a much altered landscape, so that a large proportion of the city was then classified as derelict land. This paper examines some of the problems left by the gold mining period and the possibilities and costs of rehabilitation.
