Summary
Essays on German literature.
Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was an influential essayist, historian and philosopher. Multi-volume reprints of his writings were first published in 1838, with later editions in 1840, 1847, 1857 and 1869. Each new edition incorporated additional material from Carlyle's continuing output. This seven-volume edition was published in 1872. The Linton Mechanic's Institute held the first three volumes.
