Historical information

William Howitt was an elderly Quaker, along with his two sons, went to the Victorian Goldfields. They arrived onboard the 'Kent' in September, 1852. Whilst in Australia, Howitt wrote a letter to Eliza Acton, describing the food at the Bendigo diggings, published and examined in this publication. This letter was dated 1853. Eliza Acton was an English cookery writer, authoress of 'Modern Cookery in all its branches', first published in 1845. Eliza was born in 1799, and died in 1859.
