Historical information

More than 25,000 Chinese men - and 5 Chinese women - emigrated to Victoria in the three years following 1854. For them, Victoria was Dai Gum San, the New Gold Mountian. Their bachelor settlements complete with temples, clubs, tea shops and theatres were scattered throughout the mining districts. The Chinese were often violently ill-treated, and colonial governments enacted discriminatory laws designed to segregate Chinese, to impede their mining endeavours and to exclude them from Victorian social and political life.
