Historical information

Alexander Meston was born at Banchory, Scotland in 1839. He emigrated to Melbourne in 1863 and was first employed at Weaver & Co, Elizabeth Street. In c 1868 he took over the existing drapery business of George Craib at 71 Bay Street, in the following year he married Ann McLennan, they had six children. He operated his Bay Street business until c 1897, he and Ann lived in retirement at Dundas Place Albert Park till he died in 1909. Note that a renumbering in Bay Street altered the number from 71 to 89.
