Photograph - Image, RVIB Schoolroom with two blind teachers, 1893-1895

Historical information

The schoolroom was divided into sections, with multiple classes being taught at the same time. In this image, three students are instructing three separate groups of students, who sit on two rows on long school tables. Each table can accommodate up to 4 students. The girls are dressed with white pinafores over their dresses, except for a single girl closest to camera. The boys have hose under their shorts, a white collared shirt and dark jacket with boots. One male teacher stands as he looks down at a student, with two other teachers - a male and female - reading Braille. Furthest from camera, a girl sits with her back turned to the teacher as she faces the sun coming through the window. A very large bookcase behind the teachers holds Braille volumes.
The two teachers closest to camera are Frank Roberts and Ellen Jane Andrew, who were previously students at the school and now worked as assistants.
