Historical information
Postcard photograph of Elizabeth Street looking north from Collins Street. The photograph includes several cable trams, numerous horse drawn vehicles and crowds of pedestrians with the GPO clock tower prominent in the mid ground. The destination sign on the approaching cable tram reads 'H B Railway' (Hobson's Bay Railway). Although this private company was bought by the Victorian Railways in 1878, the station name didn't change to Flinders Street Station until around 1890. This dates the photograph at around 1890.
