Document - Red Ribbon Movement

Historical information

The Red Ribbon Rebellion was organised by miners against the gold licence fee which many considered excessive. Miners and supporters wore a red ribbon as a symbol of protest against the licence fee and the often harsh methods used to enforce compliance by the authorities. There was a peaceful outcome when a deal was struck between miner's leaders and the police commissioners.
