Photograph - Ballarat Tram 39, Tram at the corner of Lydiard Street and Sturt Street, 10 August 1971

Historical information

Ballarat Tram 39 was built in 1914 by Duncan and Fraser Adelaide for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust where it was number 42. It was sold to the State Electricity Commission in 1951 and renumbered as Ballarat Tram 39. When the trams stopped running in 1971, it was acquired by Lismore Lions Club and displayed in a recreational reserve until purchased by the Museum in 1976. It was converted into a museum display and souvenir centre located at the depot until 2022. (See Item 10755 for return of 39 to Ballarat)
The photograph shows Tram 39 turning from Lydiard Street North into Sturt Street South. The Robbie Burns statue is in the centre grassed area of Lydiard Street. In the background is the Cooks Private Hotel and the Commonwealth Bank, on the corner. In the foreground is a conductor with a point bar, used for changing direction of lines.
