This is an information pamphlet about the Florence Nightingale Museum, London Florence Nightingale helped to set up the Nightingale Training School at St Thomas’s Hospital in 1860. Following the first intake of 15 ‘probationer’ trainee nurses, the school improved and expanded over the following decades, spreading Nightingale’s ideas of nurse training across the world. The school was overseen by the Matrons of St Thomas’s Hospital. During her time as Matron of St Thomas’s, Dame Alicia Lloyd Still started to collect objects that had belonged to Nightingale or that Nightingale had gifted to some of the nurses who had trained at the Nightingale Training School. The objects that Lloyd Still collected were held at the Nightingale Training School and came to be known as the ‘Nightingalia’. The objects were used by the probationer nurses as a teaching tool and occasionally they would be used for exhibitions, or to mark key anniversaries and events. The collection transferred to the newly created Florence Nightingale Museum Trust in 1983, who then opened the museum on the site of the Training School in 1989. Since then the museum has continued to grow and has welcomed thousands of visitors from around the world, sharing Nightingales legacy, celebrating Nursing and inspiring the next generation of nurses

This survey was undertaken to review the Alfred Hospital registered nurses uniform that had been introduced in 1982. For a period of approximately 18 months (November 1989-May 1991) a group of staff members (26 female and 12 male) trialled a variety of uniforms, at the end of the trial they were asked to complete a questionaire. Questionaires were also distrubted to 923 "observers" (nursing staff not wearin the trial uniforms) for their opinions. Copies of the questionaires are included in the report

Memorandum stating that the wearing of uniforms by registered nurses will no longer be compulsory at the Alfred Hospital effective immendiately (24th September, 1993). This followed on from a uniform trial and survey held in 1991. Choice of non-uniform should take into consideration occupational health and safety, and infection control. Guidence was also provided re clothing choices. It was also noted that Identification badges should be worn above the waist, so staff could be easily distiguished. Unoforms would still be provided and laundered by the Alfred Hospital for those who chose to continue wering them.The memorandum was signed by E June Alllen, Director of Nursing

Letter sent to Sister Ann Clezy from W S Philip, president of the Alfred Hospital Board of Management in December 1971. This was the first time service badges had been awarded for either 15 or 25 years of service. Ann Clezy had commenced her training in 1954 and was awarded a 15-year service badge. The badge pinned to the letter is a 35-year service badge, which Ann Clezy would have received in 1989 (at which time Ann was working in Nursing Administration

Alfred Fay Maclure (1883-1956) was a welltrained 75 known surgeon at the Alfred Hospital. His association with the Alfred began in 1908 when he became house surgeon to Hamilton Rusell. During World War I, he served with the Australian Army at Lemnos, Egypt and France, he was mentioned twice in despatches and awarded the O.B.E. Mr Maclure also spent six months working at the special plastic surgery centre at Sidcup, England. After the war he returned to work at the Alfred, and was subdean of the medical school during the 1920's. Mr Maclure had been due to retire in 1943, but he stayed on as an Honourary Surgeon until 1943 when he suffered a cereco-vascular accident. Mr Maclure trained 75 house surgeons during the 25 years he was an inpatient surgeon at the Alfred. The biography origionally appeared in the Alfred Hospital Clinical Reports, Vol 12, 1964

The Insul-cot Mark 1 is a historically significant, early portable infant incubator designed by South Australian engineer and inventor Edward Thomas (Ted) Both and his broher Donald in the 1950s. It was engineered to overcome high premature infant mortality rates in Australian hospitals by providing a clean, temperature-controlled environment while allowing easy access to the baby. This manual provided instructions for its use
