ACMI, formerly The Australian Centre for the Moving Image, is one of Australia's major cultural, tourism, leisure and learning destinations. ACMI is integral to Melbourne's international reputation as one of the world's truly creative cities. Located at the heart of Melbourne's iconic Federation Square, ACMI celebrates, explores and promotes the cultural and creative richness of the moving image in all its forms - film, television, games and digital culture. Through a vibrant annual calendar of film programs, festivals, major exhibitions, live events, creative workshops, talks, forums, education programs and Collection resources, ACMI delivers diverse audiences with countless ways to engage with the moving image. Throughout 2009 ACMI underwent a significant transformation ' the completion of a four year master plan for future growth and prosperity. Highlights included new gallery and production spaces, substantially enhanced visitor experiences and an expanded suite of new exhibitions, education, film and public programs.

Australian Centre for the Moving Image (1946)

This Victorian State Collection is managed by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), located at Federation Square in Melbourne. ACMI is a unique institution that celebrates, explores and promotes the cultural and creative richness of the moving image in all its forms - film, television and digital culture. ACMI?s collection contains feature films (16mm and 35mm film prints), documentaries, animation, experimental works, games, user generated content and media art works. It also includes archive material, film posters, publicity photographs, film stills, lobby cards, scripts, research notes, and distributor information packs documenting significant film releases in Australian for the period 1969-2001. Objects and memorabilia have a strong emphasis on the history of Melbourne television production. There are four major sub-collections: Moving Image: Comprises moving image on all formats including film, tape, disc and digital forms. Including works from the key movements, events and filmmakers of the twentieth century and contemporary cinema; works created through ACMI Public Programs; exemplary works that represent significant contributions to the history of film and new media. There is a strong emphasis on Australian content, both historical and contemporary. Installation Artworks: Comprises works that represent significant contributions to the history of film and new media; and commissioned works from local, state, national and international artists and producers. 2D Objects: Comprises books, journals, press kits, production photographs and historic distribution and publicity material for Australian and international films. 3 D Objects: Comprises significant memorabilia and pop culture objects relating to the emergence of television in Australia as well as historic film and television industry equipment.
