Bialik College Hawthorn East 3123, Victoria

Bialik College is Melbourne’s oldest Jewish school and began its existence modestly as a Zionist Sunday school and kindergarten in 1942 in North Carlton. The kindergarten was the first educational establishment in Australia to use Hebrew as a language of instruction. As the local Jewish population grew and developed, Bialik transformed into a modern, vibrant and growing kindergarten, primary and secondary school complex. The College's first Year 12 class graduated in 1990.

Bialik College today is a cross-communal Jewish Zionist school, embracing an inclusive approach to Judaism. All students attend one campus in Hawthorn, creating a close-knit community of students from as young as three years old in the Early Learning Centre, through to Year 12 in the Senior School.

Bialik College's Laura Kipen Memorial Archive is open during the school term and by appointment only.

The Laura Kipen Memorial Archive was established on campus in 2012. The collection houses a unique combination of items which trace the history of the school's early beginnings from a Sunday school based in Carlton in 1942, to the current day as a flourishing school community with over 1,000 students. The collection is housed in a permanent repository in the Bialik College VCE Centre. The College is a cross-communal Zionist school, embracing an inclusive approach to Judaism, and the archival collection is significant in reinforcing the school’s cultural heritage for current students, as well as the community as a whole.

Newspaper article - 'Bialik: An Attitude', The Herald, 27 November 1964

Bialik College, Hawthorn East 3123

Historical information

Newspaper article 'Bialik: An Attitude' published in The Herald, 27 November 1964. 'Education was not enough in moulding the essential character of the individual, said the Israeli Ambassador to Australia at the Bialik College dinner at Armon Hall last week. It had to be accompanied by a strong cultural environment. The Bialik College in this sense was not merely a school but a plan and an attitude. It was a force in society which would mobilise the environment of its pupils as well. Bialik, the great Hebrew poet, combined in his personal philosophy three elements: Scorn for the immobility of his fellow Jews a new type of Nationalism and Hope. The school must translate this philosophy to its pupils their language and must combine with it the idea that Israel was the "legitimate representative of the historic image of Jews". The Bialik dinner launched the College's building appeal. It was also the occasion for presentation of "Life Governorships" to leading Melbourne personalities. The president of the appeal directorate Mr. M. Roth announced that the sum of 6 000 pounds was raised at the dinner. Israel Buczko (journalist).' Chowers speaking at a drawing room meeting at the home or Mr. and Mrs. V. Spiegel. Others in the picture (at right): Mr. M. Roth and (at left) Messrs N. Ashkanasy and J. Solvey.
