Significance

Historical record of the beginnings of the Darebin Parklands and its role in the community. Documents the efforts of the citizens of Ivanhoe, Alphington and Heidelberg -- the Darebin Parklands Association (DPA) -- and rangers from the DCMC to maintain and preserve nature and wildlife for residents to enjoy in Melbourne's inner-north.

Historical information

In 1972 Ivanhoe Progress Association planned to fill in the wetlands because they felt it bred mosquitos, and they obtained a grant for this work to take place. Darebin Parklands Association stormed the meeting to get this decision reversed, and the wetlands were never filled in.

Historical information

Ellis Stones, well known landscape designer, designed and supervised the entrance to the Parklands from Rockbeare Grove. He designed a winding path but Council insisted on two straight paths for vehicle access.
