About

The former Bairnsdale College (established 1891) contains a display on farming machinery, a bark roof log cabin, a country community hall/school and historic domestic items. Photographic and archival material relating to the history of East Gippsland is stored at the Resource Centre. Heritage garden surrounds the building.

Our collection

East Gippsland Historical Society Collection (1964)

The Society has a large and varied collection that reflects the period from early settlement to the 1960s of Bairnsdale and the surrounding area - from early colonial cookware to gas stoves, the broad axe to chainsaw, early style christening gowns to dresses of the 1960s. The collection consists of 60,000+ items ranging from lacework to agricultural machinery to photography. The categories include agricultural equipment, costumes, photographs/negatives, telecommunications, textiles, Wars, Honour Boards, Medical/pharmacy equipment, plumbing equipment, manchester and blacksmith to name a few. Within the collection are photos/artefacts that relate to local identities or are rarities in themselves, namely the Dreier Photographic Collection 1920s - 1960s, Mona McLeod - Local Photographer 1912-1959.
